Honest verdicts from a host who's done all of them — what to prioritise, what to skip.
Spain's highest peak (3,715 m) in a Mars-like volcanic caldera — UNESCO World Heritage and the most-visited national park in Spain. The cable car (book a timed slot — €40 adult / €20 child) climbs to 3,555 m. The free summit permit (trail PNT 10 'Telesforo Bravo') is mandatory above La Rambleta and books up weeks ahead — new slots release Mondays at 07:00 Canary time. Go early: afternoon cloud rolls up and the wind can close the cable car.
Cable car & summit permit →Ancient laurel cloud-forest on the north-east tip — a UNESCO Biosphere of jagged ridges, misty trails and wild black beaches (Benijo, Almáciga). The El Pijaral / Bosque Encantado trail needs a free advance permit. Best paired with La Laguna; bring layers and a light rain jacket.
The island's most charming town — UNESCO-listed colonial streets, lively student energy, and one of Tenerife's best tapas scenes after dark. Free to wander. Perfect gateway to Anaga.
Pretty north-coast town rebuilt after the 1706 lava flow. The famous El Caletón natural lava pools are free — bring a swimsuit, though swimming is weather-dependent. Combine with Icod's dragon tree.
Knife-edge ridge village reached by the spectacular hairpin TF-436 — worth the drive for the views alone. The gorge hike is now one-way downhill only: pre-book the shuttle (TITSA 355), trail ticket and return boat from Masca beach. Children under 8 aren't allowed on the hike. Many guests are happier just doing the village viewpoints.
Official trail booking →Sheer 300–600 m sea cliffs on the west coast — best seen from the water. Combine with a whale-watching boat trip from Puerto Colón or Los Gigantes marina.
Decent water park, but a clear step below Siam Park, which is right next door and a 2-minute walk from the villa. No reason to do Aqualand if you can do Siam.
Fine for a party, poor for actually seeing wildlife respectfully. Choose a Blue Boat / 'Barco Azul' certified operator instead — they're licensed and follow the 50 m distance / no-chase rules.
South-west (your base): dry, sunny and sheltered. Reliable sun, warm calm-ish swimming. Costa Adeje is the most upmarket of the three adjoining resorts.
North (Puerto de la Cruz, La Orotava, La Laguna, Anaga): greener, lusher, cooler, more authentically Canarian — but markedly cloudier and wetter. The laurel forests, vineyards, guachinches and historic towns live up here.
Practical upshot: base sun and beach days in the south. Save Teide and the north for the clearest-looking days. If a morning looks cloudy at the villa, it often burns off by midday.
Three rhythms — pick the closest fit and mix days as the weather allows.
Hit the headlines without rushing.
Adds the north and the closest serious hike.
Groups the west coast together to save driving.

You don't need a car to enjoy Costa Adeje itself — Siam Park, beaches, restaurants and supermarkets are walkable or a short taxi away. To see the rest of the island (Teide, Masca, Anaga, the north) a hire car is by far the best option.
Taxi at the rank: roughly €25–40 to Costa Adeje (night surcharge applies); easiest for 1–4 people. Private pre-booked transfer / minibus for 6–8: usually around €100, fixed price, meet-and-greet, ideal with luggage and kids. TITSA bus (line 111 or 343): about €3.70–5, ~40 min, drops at Costa Adeje bus station — fine if travelling light.
Cicar and AutoReisen (offices at TFS) are the trusted local picks: fully comprehensive insurance with no excess, unlimited mileage, free extra driver — no nasty surprises at the desk. TopCar is a solid third option. Expect €35–55/day for an economy car. For 8 people, book a 7–9 seat minivan early (limited supply) or take two cars.
Cicar →TITSA's green 'guagua' buses cover the island. The rechargeable ten+ / TENMÁS card (€2 for the card) gives ~20–30% off single fares; tap on entry and exit. Tourist passes: 1-day ~€10, 7-day ~€50 (not valid on the special Teide / Teno lines). Top up at the airport, bus stations and kiosks.
TITSA fares →Roads are good but mountainous. The TF-21/TF-38 up to Teide is a long, steady climb at altitude. The TF-436 to Masca is famous hairpins — slow, spectacular, not for nervous drivers. Anaga's TF-12 is narrow and often foggy. Don't take the smallest car — pick something with adequate engine.
Free at the villa (3-car garage). Siam Park ~€3/day. Use shopping-centre car parks in the resort (Plaza del Duque often free for the first hour; Siam Mall). Teide has free car parks — arrive early. Masca village is essentially closed to private cars for the gorge.
Small things that quietly make the holiday better.
Weather, calima, currents, sun, SIM cards and pharmacies.
Euro (€). Cards widely accepted; carry some cash for guachinches, small bars, parking machines and tips. The Canaries use a lower local sales tax (IGIC ~7%), so many goods are cheaper than mainland Spain.
Spanish (Canarian dialect). English widely spoken in resorts. Useful: Hola · Gracias · Por favor · La cuenta, por favor · Una caña · Agua sin gas · La farmacia · Ayuda.
Not obligatory — staff are properly paid. Round up or leave roughly 5–10% in restaurants for good service, round up taxi fares, €1–2 per bag for porters, €1–2/day for housekeeping. Card machines rarely prompt for tips — carry coins.
Dec–Feb: mild ~20–23°C, reliably sunny south while north is wetter; sea ~19–20°C. Mar–May: warming, blooming, better value; calima more likely. Jun–Sep: warmest and driest, 26–30°C, sea warmest late summer (22–24°C); busiest. Oct–Nov: warm sea lingers, quieter; north gets wetter.
Hot, hazy spells of south-east wind off Africa — usually 3–7 days, more common in spring/summer. Reduces visibility, raises temperatures. If you have respiratory issues, limit exertion outdoors and postpone Teide / viewpoint trips until it clears.
UV is strong year-round at this latitude — and extreme at Teide's altitude. High-factor sunscreen, hats, reapply often; midday shade. The Atlantic breeze can mask how much sun you're getting.
Atlantic currents are stronger than the Med — swim at lifeguarded beaches inside marked zones. Obey flags: green = safe, yellow = caution, red = no swimming. Playa del Duque in particular has strong currents.
The Canaries are part of Spain/EU — EU roaming applies. Tourist prepaid SIMs are around €15–20 for plenty of data. eSIMs (Holafly, Airalo, Orange) are convenient — from roughly €4–18 depending on length and data.
112 for all emergencies (English-speaking operators). Pharmacies (green-cross signs) are everywhere in Costa Adeje; the duty 24-hour pharmacy (farmacia de guardia) is always posted on the door.
Beach kit + water shoes (volcanic sand and rocks get hot); high-SPF sun cream, hat, sunglasses; warm layers and closed shoes for Teide (cold, windy, possibly snow); proper trainers for Barranco del Infierno / Masca (sandals are refused on regulated trails); light rain layer for the north; European plug adapter (type C/F, 230 V).
